My favorite contemporary author and poet. He has published 17 books (my favorites are Toughest Indian in the World, The Lone Ranger and Tanto Fistfight in Heaven, and Ten Little Indians)and written two screenplays (Smoke Signals and the Business of Fancy Dancing). His writing draws on his experiences as a modern Native American, it is both serious and light-hearted and as Wikipedia says “marked by harsh depictions of reservation life, autobiographical elements, colorful use of humor, political outspokenness, seamless invocation of history and popular culture, and social commentary.”
The Enneagram is a 9 point personality system that originated from Sufism and represents fundamental universal cosmic laws. There are many books on how to use the Enneagram for healing and enlightenment. The teachings have had a profound impact on me in my personal relations and in my clinical work as a psychologist. Don Richard Riso, Helen Palmer, and Sandra Maitri are my favorite scholars on the Enneagram.
My favorite comedian. Margaret did a political stand up routine for free at the Valentine’s Day Marriage Equality Rally (Sacramento 2004) that I organized with Marriage Equality California and that by good fortune happened to coincide with Gavin Newsom allowing us to get married at San Francisco City Hall. Not only is she knee-slappingly funny, but Margaret Cho is political, intelligent, sexy, and a real humanitarian!
My favorite Buddhist--a Zen master, poet, peace and human rights activist. Born in central Vietnam in 1926, he studied comparative religion at Columbia and Princeton Universities in 1961 and returned to Vietnam in 1963 to stop the US-Vietnam war. He helped lead one of the great nonviolent resistance movements of the century, based entirely on Gandhian principles. Martin Luther King, Jr. was so moved by Nhat Hanh and his proposals for peace that he nominated him for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize, saying, "I know of no one more worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize than this gentle monk from Vietnam .". He now leads retreats and gives lectures on mindful living and social responsibility, "making peace right in the moment we are alive." He has several retreat centers including Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, California and has published over 85 titles of accessible poems, prose, and prayers.
Marriage Equality USA-the only grassroots organization dedicated to Marriage Equality!Marriage Equality, Inc. began as an idea in 1996 with a handful of activists believing that same-sex couples should have the freedom to marry and angry that the government wanted to pass a law barring LGBT people from this right. The organization was formed in New York on February 12, 1998, (National Freedom to Marry Day) and activists in Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco California, responding to that state's 2000 anti-marriage referendum, began Marriage Equality California (MECA). Molly and I were founding members of MECA. In 2004, I became Marriage Equality USA’s second Executive Director. Please become a member and help live up to American values-Liberty, Justice , and Marriage Equality for ALL!
"Vipassana" means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was taught in India more than 2500 years ago as a universal remedy for universal ills, i.e., an Art of Living. I highly recommend the experience. It is a free 10 day course. Free food, free modest accommodations, and free teaching. Not a bad deal, huh? All expenses are met by donations from people who have completed the course and want to donate. So, if you experience a benefit from the course and want to make a donation after it’s over you can. Again, I highly recommend Vipassana Meditation.
Laurie York, painter, photographer, filmmaker, and great friend.
Sandra Maitri was originally taught the Enneagram by Chilean Psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo, M.D., beginning in 1970. Her books "The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram: Nine Faces of the Soul", and"The Enneagram of Passions and Virtues: Finding the Way Home" take the Enneagram to a whole new level. For those seeking self and other understanding these books are a must! I recommend reading Helen Palmer or Don Richard Riso first and having a fundamental understanding of the Enneagram before you pick up Maitri.

The original Love Warriors. They played a free concert for the National Marriage Equality Rally in Washington, DC 2004 that I organized. It was a dream come true! Their music gives me shivers of pure bliss. But Robert Doershuck says it the best- “With nothing more than voice and guitar, Tuck & Patti have quietly changed the world. Not as revolutionaries, though their music can stir passions deeper than those heated by angry agitation. And not as pushers of the proverbial envelope, unless one grants that a style based on exquisite miniature gestures will captivate listeners even more than flamboyant avant indulgences. No, the sound of Tuck & Patti is a seed that nestles and grows in the garden of the soul. It opens slowly, like a blossom that somehow spreads as much light as it draws, until the last shards of darkness disappear. Like sun and gentle rain on hard-caked earth, it can work miracles.”

Sacred Therapy: Jewish Spiritual Teachings on Emotional Healing and Inner Wholeness by Estelle FrankelIn Sacred Therapy: Jewish Spiritual Teachings on Emotional Healing and Inner Wholeness, Estelle Frankel introduces the spiritual healing wisdom of the Kabbalah, and shows how its myths and symbols serve as therapeutic paradigms for growth, healing and transformation. Sacred Therapy takes you on a journey into the heart of mystical Judaism--a realm in which light emanates from darkness, perfection is reached through imperfection, and wholeness is achieved by integrating the contradictory and often fragmented aspects of our being. On a personal note-I had the fortune of attending Estelle's Jewish meditation classes in Berkeley years ago. She is an incredible teacher, guide, and mensch.
Award-winning documentary on marriage equality. This uplifting and poignant documentary, being shown in film festivals around the world, highlights a momentous, historical milestone when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom engaged in ground-breaking civil disobedience as he allowed same-sex couples to marry at San Francisco City Hall. "With rousing speeches from beloved comic Margaret Cho, Assembly Member Mark Leno, Marriage Equality leaders Molly McKay and Dr. Davina Kotulski, and interviews with seven long-term, recently married couples, FREEDOM TO MARRY brings a joyful, personal face to same-sex marriage at the height of this burgeoning civil rights movement." ~Los Angeles Outfest
